Kenya Global Space Education Summit 2024: Launching Dreams into Space

On August 16th and 17th, 2024, the Kenya Global Space Education Summit brought together over 400 enthusiastic participants at the University of Nairobi for an inspiring and educational journey into the world of aerospace. Organized by IgnitedThinkers in collaboration with the Leo Sky Africa, Columbia University’s Global Center in Nairobi, and the STEMlens Network, this two-day event provided a unique platform for aspiring space enthusiasts to explore, learn, and connect with leading figures in the space industry.

Day 1: Inspiring Primary and High School Students

The first day of the summit was dedicated to nurturing the curiosity and passion for space among primary and high school students.

Virtual Talks with Renowned Astronauts: Students were captivated by virtual presentations from two esteemed astronauts, including the first African woman to travel to space. These talks provided invaluable insights into the realities of space exploration, personal journeys of overcoming challenges, and the exciting possibilities that the future holds in the aerospace sector. The astronauts shared inspiring stories and answered questions, leaving the students motivated and eager to pursue their interests in space science.

Engaging Hands-on Activities: The rest of the day was filled with interactive and educational activities designed to bring space science to life:

• Water-Propelled Rocket Launches: Students participated in building and launching their own water rockets, learning about the principles of rocket propulsion and aerodynamics in a fun and engaging way.
• Planetarium Experience: A mobile planetarium was set up to take students on a breathtaking tour of the cosmos, exploring stars, planets, and galaxies, and deepening their understanding of our universe.

Insightful Talks and Presentations: Attendees engaged with a series of enlightening talks delivered by industry leaders, including Michelle Del Valle, CEO of FinSat Inc, and prominent representatives from the Kenya Space Agency and Leo Sky Africa. The discussions covered a wide array of topics such as advancements in space technology, the importance of innovation and entrepreneurship in aerospace, and the role of Africa in the future of global space exploration.

ThinkTank Challenge: Participants took part a Think Tank challenge that promoted critical thinking and problem-solving skills relevant to the aerospace sector and 4 SDGs. These sessions provided hands-on experience and practical knowledge, bridging the gap between academic learning and real-world applications.

Networking Opportunities: The summit facilitated numerous networking opportunities, allowing attendees to connect with industry experts, mentors, and peers.
